Built for Accounting, Tax & Bookkeeping Firms
Tool Comparison

What is the best AI for accounting? An honest comparison.

The phrase 'best AI for accounting' covers four very different things. This guide separates them so you don't pay for a chat tool when you needed an agent, or vice versa.

The four categories (don't mix them up)

  1. General chat AIs (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot). Great for drafting, research, summarising. Not connected to your firm's data unless you wire it up. Cost per seat: low.
  2. AI-native bookkeeping platforms (Digits, Basis). Replace the ledger itself. Strong for small businesses, not always a fit for firms with embedded Xero/MYOB/QBO workflows.
  3. AI features bolted onto existing stacks (Xero JAX, Karbon AI, Dext, Hubdoc). Incremental productivity inside tools you already use. Low risk, low ceiling.
  4. Custom AI agents built on your firm's workflows (AP, close, chasing). Highest ROI, highest setup effort, and the only category that touches your fee structure.

Which is "best" depends on what you're solving

  • Want to write better client emails faster? A general chat AI ($20/seat) is the best AI for accounting.
  • Want fewer hours coding bank feeds? An AI bookkeeping tool inside your existing stack wins.
  • Want your firm to deliver the same workload with fewer fee-earners next year? Custom agents win.

The trap

Most firms buy a chat AI, share it across the team, and call it their "AI strategy." It saves time. It does not change the cost base. Twelve months later a competitor is quoting 30% lower fees on the same engagement.

The decision framework

Before you evaluate any tool, answer this: If this works perfectly for a year, what changes on our P&L? If you can't answer it, you're shopping for AI, not buying it.
